Degenerative disc disease

Degenerative disc disease refers to a syndrome related to age and other factors such as genetic / environmental and mechanical that produce a progressive dehydration of fibrous ring and disc nucleus pulposus.

Its main symptom is chronic low back pain. This degenerative process causes the disc to lose its elastic and cushioning function between the adjacent vertebrae, that can develop in MODIC type changes.

Exhausted the conservative treatment through physiotherapy, analgesics and infiltrations the surgical option by arthrodesis or disc prosthesis offers good to excellent clinical results in selected patients.

The choice will depend on the age of the patient, their functional demand and the state of joint processes and adjacent discs..
